Zapier is the most established thing here and its app coverage is unmatched, so a droid uses the same category of plumbing underneath. Where they differ is what sits on top. Zapier gives you Zaps you design, Agents you configure, and MCP so other assistants can act across those 9,000 apps, all of which assumes someone in your team is the one deciding what the automation should do. A droid is hired for the outcome instead: you tell it the job on a call, it works out which tools to touch, asks before anything risky, and picks up the phone when that's what the job needs.

03The difference

What a droid adds.

Zapier is the wiring. These are the things that need somebody, rather than something, in the middle.

  1. Nobody builds it

    You explain the job once, out loud. There's no Zap to author, no branches to maintain, and nothing to rebuild when the process shifts.

  2. It handles the exception

    The refund that doesn't match any rule gets thought about and escalated, rather than sitting in a failed-run queue.

  3. It picks up the phone

    Its own number, live voice and video with screen-share, and SMS follow-up. Telephony isn't a step you can bolt into a Zap.

  4. You can ask it what happened

    It's in Slack and email, so someone can query a run in progress or redirect it, rather than reading a task history.

  5. It gets better at the job

    Repeated work gets distilled into reusable functions on its own, so the fifth month costs less than the first.

  6. One bill

04Credit where it's due

Where Zapier shines.

Thirteen years of integration work is not something you route around. If the job is "when X happens in this app, do Y in that one", use Zapier.

  • 9,000+ apps, including the long tail of tools nobody else has bothered to support.
  • For a simple, well-defined trigger and action, a Zap is faster to set up than explaining the job to anything.
  • Zapier MCP lets Claude or ChatGPT act across that whole catalogue, which is a genuinely good use of the position they're in.
  • Tables, Interfaces and Chatbots mean a lot of small internal tools never need building properly.
  • It's mature, it's reliable, and everyone in your company has already heard of it.

The questions that come up most.

Zapier has Agents now. Isn't that the same thing?

It's the same direction, and Zapier is well placed for it given the catalogue behind it. What differs in practice is who does the deciding. A Zapier Agent is configured with instructions and a set of tools you choose, and it runs inside that automation frame. A droid is briefed like a person, works out which tools the job needs, holds memory across runs and channels, and can be interrupted mid-task to change course.

You support fewer apps. Isn't that just worse?

On breadth, Zapier wins outright. What ~3,000 apps under managed OAuth buys instead is depth on each one: read, write and destructive scopes, per-tool policies, and approval gates on the actions that matter. If the tool you need sits in Zapier's long tail and not in that catalogue, that's a real reason to use Zapier.

Could we use both?

Plenty of teams do, and it's a sensible arrangement. Zapier is very good at moving data between systems on a trigger, and a droid is better at the part with judgment in it, or a person on the other end. The two overlap less than the feature lists suggest.

Is my data used to train models?
